Carbon dioxide is a colorless, odorless gas produced by respiration, combustion, and decomposition. Its removal from the atmosphere is driven by photosynthesis and uptake at the ocean surface. It is essential to the Earth’s carbon cycle and is a long-lived greenhouse gas contributing significantly to global warming through anthropogenic emissions from fossil fuel burning, deforestation and other human activity.
